I'd like to be precisely sure, if possible.

Well, according to MobyGames there were:

You'll still have access to the games you've downloaded, even if they're removed from the collection or you've deleted them off your system, as long as you're still a subscriber. If your subscription ends, you won't be able to access those games, but they'll still be available again if/when you resubscribe.

This originated with the sports games. Most team sports have a season that starts roughly halfway through the year and ends the next year, with the regular season-long competition ending with the play-off period. This play-off period determines who wins the season, who qualifies for the international cup leagues (like Europe cup or Champion's League) and who is demoted, and as such is considered the most important part of the season. It made sense to let your game refer to the year that second half took place in. In addition, most sports games need a couple months to get the final league lineups incorporated in the product that needs to get shipped to stores, so they release near the end of the year. In 1994, when FIFA 95 was the first game to mention a year, your game had to be finished at least a month or two before your release date, because you couldn't patch your games. This was a couple years before the internet was formalized, so you couldn't publish an automatic update, and games were incorporated into cartridges, which weren't easy to patch. You also needed a lot of time to build enough cartridges, because unlike later DVDs, these were essentially mini computers that needed to be assembled. FIFA 95 released in mid November 1994, and every sports game thereafter was pretty much required to use the same naming scheme, because the current year was already taken by the title beforehand, and an (XX-1)-XX naming scheme would be too confusing. Then later, names in other genres started to take the same naming scheme.

I believe that simply deleting the shortcuts file, which is /config/shortcuts.vdf, should do it, but I haven't tried it myself so I suggest backing it up first. I don't believe it should do any harm in any case. Another surefire way is to remove Steam and re-install it, but even if you back up all the game data locally first and then reload it, the whole process will take longer than just removing all the links one by one.

No, they would be considered 8-bit because this bit rating relates to the processor. Using the terms 8-bit or 16-bit for example refers to the console itself rather than the games that can be played on them. See here for the Gameboy colour specs, you can see the processor is 8-bit. This term could be confused with the colour palette available, which again from the link above, show the Gameboy colour to have a 15-bit colour palette. However, this is not a factor for the term in question. The increased colour palette is most likely available due to an increase in memory from previous Gameboy editions rather than anything else.

OK, putting this into an answer since I realized my comments didn't have the proper sense of doom. This probably isn't fixable, as far as I know, because it is all in the circuits and hardware of the game or the gameboy, which you can replace, ie. Get a new game or use a different gameboy, but that's definitely not the same as fixing the issue. So there are two places you can have problems - the game cartridge, or the gameboy itself. Having two Gameboys makes testing this much easier. Since running Super Mario Land 2 made the lines go away, it makes me think that the problem really just is with the Pokemon cartridge. I bet that the game's ROM and memory addresses or instructions have suffered from bit rot or something like that, and that the gameboy is probably trying to run the corrupted game, and struggling. Hence weird sprites appearing, jumbled text, and white lines. I'd be curious whether you get the lines or any similar issues with other games! I have a copy of Link's Awakening DX that has some corruption (I think) but it's a little subtler than this. My take is, it's unique enough to have a game that's creepypasta worthy! (Especially if it's unfixable) So I just treat it like a special version of the game. So summary: As far as I know, there's no fixing it. Maybe some gameboy or circuit experts will know magic tricks. Things you can try that I know of: Use gameboy bits (you can buy them online for pretty cheap) and pop both your gameboy and game cartridge apart, and give them a cleaning with some rubbing alcohol! It's technically possible that something weird got in there and is messing with the circuits, and maybe you could jiggle it out. Usually something you can clean will be dramatically gross when you open it up, like a spilled sugary liquid or something. Actually, you can also try to replace the game cartridge's save battery! You WILL lose your save data iirc. But usually if it's the save battery, the game simply won't hold a save, and your problem is much more interesting than that!

The memory card in Game Boy games needs power to run. It contains a small battery to do this when it's not in a Game Boy. Pokemon Gold was released 15 years ago. The cartridge is very old and the battery has run out. This means that the memory card cannot hold data unless it is actively being powered (which somewhat defeats the point of saving the game). It is possible to change the battery. Here's a guide on how to do it. It's worth noting that the type of battery the Pokemon Gold cartridge uses is a model 'CR2025' battery. If you are not comfortable with changing the battery yourself, many stores, especially those focused on retro or vintage video games, are capable of replacing the battery for a nominal fee

In my experience, since I bought an old used Nintendo Gameboy Classic (the brick version), there are two things to consider when buying a Gameboy. No. 1 Does the battery compartment still work and conduct power while playing? No. 2 Are there any loose contacts or damaged cables/components inside the case? No.3 Of course, the overall condition of the device should also be suitable for playing, but that's obvious. You should ask to try the device before purchasing it so that you can check for possible damage. In order to check the first problem, namely whether the battery compartment is still intact, you should insert batteries into the compartment and try to switch on the Gameboy. Try rotating the batteries inside the compartment while the unit is turned on. If it stays on and does not reset when rotated, it should be fine. Spilled battery acid can attack the contacts and sometimes cause the current to not flow properly. The second problem will also be noticed quite quickly while playing, so insert a game and try to play it. Loose contacts or faulty hardware should be noticed pretty quickly because the game isn't displayed correctly, the Gameboy is constantly reset, or the screen displays nothing at all. You can try to shake the Gameboy a little. These devices are designed to withstand a few blows. In this way the device is not damaged and loose contacts are obvious at the latest then. But make sure it's not a user error because the game isn't inserted the right way. But if you've played with a Gameboy before, you'll know when it's been inserted correctly because it won't move freely. So, in summary, just be prepared when testing a Gameboy before you buy it. Bring a fresh pair of batteries and a game you can rely on to work. (Old games like Pokemon may no longer be able to save because the internal battery is empty, but they are still playable).

Yes, it is possible. I've done it many times. But once you got a monster, "capturing" another one of the same species becomes much, much harder. We're talking 1-2 Sirloins harder. So basically, if you throw enough treats at it, it will follow you. Since the Gremlin you're trying to get is easily accessible early on, you can save, go into a portal, find a Gremlin and throw loads of meat onto it. If it still doesn't follow you, reset and try again. This "strategy" becomes a lot less viable later when you're trying to get another one of a monster available deep inside a portal (Metabbles, for example). Then, you will need to resort to that item that lets you save inside a Portal (Bookmark? not sure what it's called any more...).

The information will be kept general and unlinked here for obvious reasons, but there are pieces of equipment that can accept a GBA cartridge, and then connect to a PC. That would allow read access to a cartridge, and depending on the cart you can write to some as well. You might imagine it a bit like an SD card reader, except cartridges only contain one large blob of data, not any filesystem or such. ROMs are usually just dumps of the cartridge contents to disk using such a device, but it is also possible to write and compile your own, and with a "blank" cart to write to you can use one to test and develop your own games for the GBA as well.

Newer versions of Tetris use "bags" to ensure that you don't go too long without getting a particular piece again. However, many older versions of Tetris, such as the Gameboy version, produced pieces at random (With a bias against getting the same piece in a row,) so long droughts without a critical piece can occur. An example can be seen in this video (This is the NES version, but I believe the Gameboy version works similarly): In short, I think it's fair to say that the Gameboy version of Tetris has a significant luck component.

In terms of your inventory and such, there is no such thing as the game "saving", updates are instantly applied to the server, so it isn't possible to lose anything. In terms of quests, there are frequent "checkpoints" throughout the game (usually about every 5-10 minutes). Anytime you stop playing, you will resume the quest from your last checkpoint the next time you start again. There is no way to force a quest save other than reaching one of these points.

There was recently a security update by Microsoft implemented for Windows 7 and 8 that breaks native compatibility with a very large handful of old CD-based games, namely anything with SafeDisc or SecuROM write protection built in. This security modification is built in to Windows 10 and cannot be worked around. The following is a highly abbreviated list of potentially affected games: Age of Empires 2 American McGee's Alice Battlefield 1942 Civilization III and IV Command & Conquer series Crysis Diablo II Empire Earth series Far Cry (1 & 2) Grand Theft Auto series Halo LEGO games Might & Magic series Need for Speed series Rainbow Six series Star Wars games (including KOTOR) The Sims (1 & 2) Total War series The solution for this problem is actually pretty simple (Windows 7 and 8 only). Simply re-enable the driver service disabled by the security update and start the service. To do this, open a command prompt as an administrator: Windows button -> cmd.exe -> right-click -> Run as administrator Run this command (with the exact spaces) to reenable the driver's service: sc config secdrv start= demand You should get a [SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS message. Then run this command to start the service: sc start secdrv Then open the game and it should work! To be "safe," you can stop the service by restarting your computer or using the command: sc stop secdrv If you don't want to have to start this service every time you turn on your computer, you can set the configuration to auto instead of demand. According to the security update, this may potentially leave your computer at risk for some virus attacks though, so use caution while this service is enabled.
