Skyrim character progress and Steam Family Sharing

I've allowed someone to try Skyrim through Family Sharing but I have one concern, when my friend plays Skyrim for the first time, will them creating a character wipe all my progress? Thanks for any answers.

No, it will not wipe your progress: they will have their own local safe files (provided they are playing on their own systems).

The problem has been discussed on the Steam Forums. The problem is that each game has to have a binary-identical version of the vc++ redistributables. Since games link against different versions of these libraries, steam always installs them the first time as a safeguard. Credit to mordi2k for finding the post Here's a link to the Steam Support Article about it (forum post is no longer available). The text is quoted below. Why does DirectX install with every game? Running the DirectX installer is not a matter of making sure your overall DirectX install being up-to-date. Microsoft has a helper library with D3D called D3DX. You'll find binaries for this like d3dx9_43.dll in your Windows\system32 folder. There are over 40 different versions of the D3DX library for D3D9 alone, and many more for D3D10 and 11 as well. Each game that uses the D3DX helper library is linked to a specific version. As such the game must run the correct D3D installer version that it was specifically compiled with to ensure the binaries exist. Even if a later version of the binary is already installed, that version cannot be used, and even if your DirectX install is up-to-date because you've run a more recent version of the installer that is not guaranteed to have installed all previous versions. Even worse, if a version is installed for x86 it doesn't guarantee the same version is installed for x64, so 64 bit and 32 bit games may need to run the same exact installer version but targeting different platforms when run. Furthermore, Microsoft's licensing terms prevent anyone from distributing the files directly, the only way to distribute them is to run the installer, that's also the only supported method from Microsoft to check that the correct version installed. Trying to manually check for the correct versions is extremely complicated because there are numerous files that must all be present and individual system configuration options like dll search paths complicate the situation. In addition, the dependencies and required checks may change in each new version of the D3DX runtime. The code to check correctly and repair broken installs all exists in the installer and running it is a guarantee that the correct binaries will exist when you run the game and prevents lots of bad cases where a game would fail to launch with an obscure error if a windows install was either missing the correct version or somehow corrupted in the past. Why don't Valve's Source Engine games run the DirectX Installer? Games which don't use the D3DX helpers (such as Source engine games) don't require running the installer on first launch as they only depend on major d3d9/10/11 versions being installed. However, games that do use D3DX must run it as it's the only way Microsoft has allowed for distributing and checking the version info on the files.

This is a confusing topic, for sure. The "Ladder" in Diablo 2 is essentially a scoreboard that keeps track of the top characters in each realm. Occasionally, there is a Ladder reset, where all Ladder characters are integrated into non-Ladder and Ladder characters must be created anew. Since Ladder characters cannot interact at all with non-Ladder characters, this means there are two separate economies going at once. Ladder characters do not have access to older items that may have been created before patches changed item drop rates or stats, or old items made by item duplication exploits. Because of this, good items tend to be much more expensive in Ladder. Additionally, there are some items that are only available in Ladder, and cannot be dropped or created (usually via a Rune Word) in non-Ladder. These items continue to exist, however, when the Ladder characters are integrated with the non-Ladder during a reset, and these items can be quite valuable in the non-Ladder economy. Overall, Ladder in Diablo 2 is a way for Blizzard to help control the economy. If the economy is getting out of hand, a new Ladder season will just start the economy over because everything is removed and has to be found from scratch again.

I had the same question, and here is what I found. Since the SteamPipe update, .GCF files are not used anymore by Steam. Instead, content is packed into .VPK files. Source: Source engine games on SteamPipe Now, to locate different files you may need to modify (in order to create a mod for example), you need to navigate to (example given for Half-Life 2, so for Garry's Mod you need to change the folder's name): steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2\resource. Here you can find all the .RES files, which can be modified with a text editor. In my case, it was the gamemenu.res file, to modify items on the game menu. Currently, after latest games library UI update (November 2019), you can find that in game details: Select a game on the list Click 'Show more details' button If the game supports Cloud Saves, the appropriate information will be listed in details somewhere under the button

Apparently there's something called SteamCMD that you can use Here's a thread in the steam forums about it Notice the bit near the bottom about forcing it to download 64 bit on 32 bit I've not used it so can't say for sure if it works. Use at own risk

When you add a non-steam application/game to Steam, it will update under the "Now playing" heading, so if you renamed it to "Watching movie" when you load the app it will say "Now playing: Watching movie" or similar. Once you end the application, the status will just go back on "Online". As for leaving the media player running, and having Steam automatically update your status depending on wether it is currently playing or not, I do not believe that is supported.

Steam has no built-in options for this and, while there is an API for third-party sites, it's limited by user privacy settings. That said, there are sites that give some stats. Searching for a specific stat you are looking for will likely yield a few results, but here's a couple sites with common stats: most achievements, as well as quite a few other top lists. highest level, along with stats for badges

Open your profile, click edit profile, change your name and save the changes. Note: Everything might not look the same, as I use some addins (steamdb is displayed in first picture, lastpass in third) and your language might be different.

You are allowed to add them continously. However there is a constraint, namely that you are only allowed to add 5 friends roughly every 90 days (So when you added your 5th friend you have to wait 90 days until you are able to again. Further you can't trick the system by deleting friends before the term). You get a message when you are in this situation which I don't want to reproduce at the moment because of the 90 days - That goes without saying Steam can't say when you have shared your games with 5 friends it's over before warning, but also it is self-evident that there has to be this constraint with the 90 days since piracy would take place in form of shared steam libraries in combination with virtual LANs (which is existing already what I strongly assume). The same issue you have on the market e.g. with time penalties on item deals. There are several post in the steamcommunity sites, but you might've a look into this one.

While not all of the perks in the Block skill apply to non-shielded blocks, the ones in the right branch (which contains Power Bash) apply to both shield and two-handed weapon blocks.

The Linux version of Steam has a specific library for Steam OS + Linux. On other platforms you can use SteamDB: sign in via Steam and show owned games only.

RoW means "rest of world". Many games are released in one region first, and then "rest of world" second. For example, when I look at that game on steam, it says "SPECIAL PROMOTION! Offer ends July 9th." So my region will get the game first.

While I'm unsure whether it's possible to directly transfer one steam cloud to another, it's possible to do so in your local files. There are two occasions where the steam cloud synchronizes with the local files on the computer: Whenever a game is launched, the steam cloud is downloaded so that the local files are up to date with any other systems you've played on Whenever a game is closed, the local files are uploaded into the steam cloud so that other systems will be able to access the new saves you created. In short, if you want to transfer the save data from your brother's account into yours, here's what you should do: Find where the saves are stored for his account on your computer, this can vary a lot between games. Copy those files to where saves are stored for your account The next time you launch and close that game with your account, those files will be uploaded into your steam account.

This is obvious 4+ years old now but here's the answer, which I found after fiddling around intercepting windows messages. Rename: \steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV\paul.dll to: \steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV\paul.disable.dll Annoying Rockstar Social Club dialog will now be suppressed. Also, if you have more VRAM than 2GB then GTA 4 thinks you don't meet minimum requirements and locks the game to 800x600 with the lowest available graphics settings. To fix this click the SET LAUNCH OPTIONS button in the game's steam properties sheet and add -norestrictions -nomemrestrict
