How do I start a new game as Luigi?

I've come back to Super Mario Galaxy after a few years and want to play from the beginning as Luigi. I have an existing save file that has Luigi unlocked by collecting 120 stars as Mario, but Luigi has already collected 16 stars on that file.

Is there a way to start a fresh save file as Luigi or restart Luigi's progress on an existing save file?

The only way to create a new save with 0 stars with Luigi is to first collect 120 stars with Mario.

There is no way to create a new savegame with 120 stars already collected for Mario and 0 stars for Luigi except for copying an existing savegame that is exactly at that point in the game.

The game does not allow for you to remove already collected stars in a savegame.

I just got far enough on a play through to check this. Armor and weapons on stands at Corvo Bianco do not appear in the stash when you do a New Game+. So you need to pick them up or put them in the stash before starting the new game.

This GameFAQs guide shows you how to complete all of the comet challenges. I think this is the part you are looking for: Get back onto the ship, and look under the lookout tower. There are two coins. Sideflip, wall jump, and spin to get both of them, but you need to do this two separate times. The star appears on the ship, right in behind you.

According to speedrun.com, there's a category for 120 stars and another for 242 stars. 120 category rules: Start timing when selecting "Play This File," and end timing when touching the final Grand Star. Get all 120 Stars, then beat Bowser's Galaxy Reactor. 242 category rules: Start timing when selecting "Play This File." Timing stops once you have collected 121 stars as Luigi and as Mario on the same file

You get to play as Luigi, the controls are a bit less easy to handle. He runs faster and jumps higher, but he is harder to stop. You can then get all the stars all over again. Believe me, it's kinda difficult to get all the stars.

You only get a quest reward once per playthrough per character. This means there's only one chance for a level 50 Evil Smasher. If you join someone else's game and re-complete a mission, you will not get rewards for that mission again. So is there a way to start a new game, quickly get to TVHM to accept level 50 missions? No, not without save file editing. And my limited attempts at messing with Gibbed's editor have been unsuccessful. And a playthrough with a hacked level 50 character from start to completing THVM will still take several hours. Additionally, could I just accept the quests with my level 50 char in a new game, or will the mission just scale to the host level? Missions are complicated. It seems to find a way to always give you the lowest possible quest reward; if you've already taken the mission, it seems to give you the item at the level you took that mission, ignoring the host's mission level. I'm not 100% sure about that though, confirmation would be nice.

In one sense it's "more of the same" in that you work your way through "worlds" and "galaxies" finding stars and beating sub bosses to rescue Peach from Bowser. However, there are differences: the navigation between worlds and galaxies is different - you're travelling through them rather than visiting from a central hub. You get to play as Luigi during the main game, either as a suggestion on random levels or eventually by choice. Yoshi is available on some worlds. The worlds/galaxies are all new - though there is some "borrowing" from earlier games. See this question What happens (in terms of replayability) when you complete the game is different. Oh, this is a fun little guy. He is, in fact, an enemy, so yes, he is interact-able. If you manage to chase this bugger down (running long jumps help here) and spin/stomp him, he will explode in a shower of ~20 star bits. They're called "Starbags" according to Super Mario Wiki.

The letter text remains the same before and after the rescue. Peach is safe but far away again (in her castle). I don't think the letter speaks of "rescue" though. Kudos to your daughter for appreciating the story line. I am huge Mario fan myself and also think in those terms. It makes the game more enjoyable. Alas, I don't think there is a way to see Peach after rescuing her. I recommend you tell your daughter that Peach is safe in her castle since Bowser has been defeated (for a while). Mario is free to pursue a few remaining adventures after finishing his main task. (I agree it would be great if Peach joined Mario as a character he could talk to after rescue. Nintendo really missed an opportunity here.)

A-type is your standard endurance game, you start with the usual empty field, and you're just looking for scoring. Speed increases with every 10 lines cleared. B-type is something that, to the best of my knowledge, is only present on some of the older Tetris games (both the NES Tetris and the Game Boy Tetris had this) and tasks you with getting 25 lines at a given speed, with a starting field that contains blocks based on the height setting you selected. At higher speeds and heights, it is entirely possible you might have an unwinnable setup.

If you decide to move into New Game+ you will carry over: Armor & Accessories (both equipped and unequipped) Hacksilver Upgrades Abilities However, collectibles will not carry over. This means that if you do decide to get the platinum in NG+, you will be recollecting any collectibles you may have collected in the initial playthough. Also, in NG+, enemies will scale with the level that carried over from the initial playthrough. So ideally, it will not be any easier than the initial playthrough. The major differences between endgame in the initial playthough and NG+ is the addition of more armor sets and stronger version of previous equipment. Basically, if you are willing to recollect all the collectibles (or complete that achievement prior to NG+), you will have the benefit of a wider range of stronger equipment to complete any extra side quests and endgame content. There are two turtleshells in that level, a green and a red one. Use the turtleshells to swim towards him, and once you're within strinking distance, do a 'spin' attack so that you throw the turtleshell. It takes 5 hits to defeat him. After the first hit, he releases homing piranhas that come after you. Dodge these by making quick turns. There is also a power mushroom that gives you 6 health.

If you enable the in-game Lua console, you can use it to rename a character on the fly. To enable the console, you need to edit your grimrock.cfg file, which can be found in the same place as your saved games. (You should close Grimrock before doing this.) The file is broken up into sections; in the first section, there's a line with console = false. Just change the false to true. You probably also want to change the consoleKey line, since the default is a key that doesn't exist on an American keyboard (I believe it's the § key on a Finnish keyboard, but I'm not certain of that). I recommend using a function key, since whichever key you choose overrides anything else you might want to do in the console (for example, if you choose Z as the key, you cannot type a Z in the console). To use F12, change the consoleKey line to read consoleKey = 123. Once you have the console enabled, you just have to type the following command in to change a character's name: party:getChampion(2):setName("New Name") Where you replace 2 with the champion to change (in the range 1 to 4) and New Name with whatever name you choose. If you want to disable the console again afterwards (since it could be a temptation to cheat in all sorts of ways!), you can just change grimrock.cfg back to console = false.

No, you do not have to use up all of your skill points during character creation, in fact you don't have to spend any of them at all. Any skill points that you don't spend will still be available to spend and won't be lost: These can then be spent once you're in the game as the need arises, however keep in mind that without any weapons skills your weapons will be very difficult to aim and do less damage than a trained weapon skill.

I believe that simply deleting the shortcuts file, which is /config/shortcuts.vdf, should do it, but I haven't tried it myself so I suggest backing it up first. I don't believe it should do any harm in any case. Another surefire way is to remove Steam and re-install it, but even if you back up all the game data locally first and then reload it, the whole process will take longer than just removing all the links one by one.
