I've been downloading and playing strategy games on my Mac device, and I'm about to buy a new gaming laptop.

Will all my Steam games on my Mac device be playable on my Windows device?

Usually a game is developed for Windows and then it receives a port to macOS, so it's reasonable to think that you should be able to play them all.

There are rare cases of low end indie titles that were Mac-exclusive over the years, according to Reddit.

IE uses the Windows root trust list. It's not compiled into the kernel, per se, but it's installed into the SYSTEM registry hive. It also does not have any means of updating the stored trust list independently. Update 2017-07-16: Per http://netsekure.org/2011/04/automatic-ca-root-certificate-updates-on-windows/ , Internet Explorer's reliance on CryptoAPI (which calls into components with privileged access) means that CryptoAPI can and does update roots, on at least some versions of Windows. (And if you disable Windows Update and have no other patch management procedure, you're going to have a Bad Time.)

Other than the social features of Steam, nothing really. Some games will have Steam achievements, collectible trading cards, and statistics (I think it'll track hours played for almost every game) -- if these things are interesting to you, then you may want to use Steam for those games. Steam allows you to chat with people and show them what you're doing at any given moment in the game. If you like notifications popping up saying that so-and-so you knew in college has started playing Dota 2, then you may want to use Steam over not using it. Steam will base "recommendations" on the games you purchase and play on the platform. If you don't know what you want to buy, or like having suggestions for such things, then you may want to use Steam for all your personal computer entertainment needs.

Update 1: PSOne Classics will come to the Vita August 28, 2012 (Joystiq) Update 2: On August 28, PlayStation Vita firmware update 1.8 went live, enabling the Vita to play select PSOne Classics. IGN has a list of compatible PSOne games. Update 3: At this point most, but not all, PSX classics are supported on Vita. As per a recent mixup, all PSX games were temporarily downloadable on PS Vita, and all of them work. The reason any remaining titles aren't available on Vita is likely due to licensing issues. PS Vita didn't support PSOne/archive titles at launch. You will need to wait. From Gamespot: Japanese PS Vita FAQ page reveals upcoming handheld will not play archived titles initially, says more details will be revealed later. And from the Playstation Blog: Q: Is PS Vita compatible with other PlayStation platform games like PS3, PS2, or PSP? Do you have any plan to support other PlayStation platforms in the future? This sounds like the file storing that information got corrupted. First, open the following folder in Windows Explorer:%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations Start Steam, wait for it to load, then close it again. Now check the folder you've opened before. There should be one file that's been modified right now. In my case, the file name is 493e32cec2810e2e.customDestinations-ms, but you might have a different one. Move it to your Recycle Bin or another folder. This way you're able to restore it, in case something breaks. Restart Steam. If everything worked, your jump list should be back and building once again.

If you have the case, US PS Vita games that came out after the PS TV's release will usually have a "Compatible with PS TV" label in the top left. For older games, you won't know until you try them.

I've had cases where installing an older game forces an installation of a particular version of DirectX, and somehow the compatibility is broken. It seems to report version N, but really some parts of it are an earlier version. I recommend removing DirectX entirely and reinstalling the whole thing. You could just try to install the current version without removing anything, but that leaves open the possibility of conflict again. So far, the times I've had that with Steam games (and other non-steam games) removing/reinstalling DirectX has resolved the issue. EDIT: One of the things I didn't mention before was the fact that Steam provides a bit of a "contained installation" of games. If there are particular things that a game needs (Dosbox is a good example) then Steam will handle that for you. While it's entirely possible for you to run some games outside of Steam, they are really not designed to do that. Steam manages things like DirectX installations for a game, preventing it from quashing the one that you have on your computer. Some games use Windows Live, some games use UPlay, and Steam manages that for you. I'd highly recommend not launching games outside of Steam if you can manage it.

This is a Powershell security policy to prevent scripts maliciously run on your system improperly. So all scripts that are not signed will have their execution blocked. In other words, the implementation policy is as Restricted (which is the standard).You can control these permissions using cmdlet Set-ExecutionPolicy. What you've got sounds like a bug. If you aren't getting these anymore, you might try: Refreshing your Steam files Toggling this setting off, quitting steam, logging back in, then turning it back on again. Use Win+R to open the Windows Run dialog, then enter steam://open/console then enter the command clear_marketing_message_views Open the localconfig.vdf file which is in Steam\userdata\\config\ and check that NotifyAvailableGames is set to 1 Are you sure you're completely quitting all your games? (Dumb question, I know...) Many have launchers, or you might be running something like uPlay in the background. If none of that works, (or if you're like me and dismiss these things and then realize you meant to read them) there are ways to make them appear. There's actually a UI button in Big Picture mode, although I've never seen a similar one outside the mode: You can also manually visit each news update's page, the id's are listed in the aforementioned localconfig.vdf file. In the same block as the NotifyAvailableGames section, the numbers under Messages are part of a URL: http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/message/(number) You can visit this URL in your browser to see the message. It could probably be automated, but this is extremely painful and not particularly timely otherwise... As a final note, if you are concerned about missing a time-limited sale on a game, I suggest using IsThereAnyDeal instead. They can send you email alerts about games on your wishlist, and cover more stores than just Steam.

I had the same problem, and I really have no idea why it happens or how to fix it. I have, however, found a workaround. I tend to just do this from the get-go instead of actually using the setup, because of weird issues like this. Don't run the disc setup; instead, activate your CD key manually, and abort the actual installation process. Open the backup window (Steam → Backup and Restore Games…). Select Restore a previous backup. Browse to the drive letter of the installation disc. Steam should tell you that it found a backup of Modern Warfare 3. Click next. The game will install from disc. This has worked for me with MW3 specifically, and other games. Note that you can't entirely avoid downloading it; you'll still have to download the latest patches to bring your game up to date.

Taken from here: After making sure that you have a copy of the game files saved somewhere else, right click on the game in your library, and under the Properties tab select "Delete all local content" (or uninstall the game). Then place the files back into the folder (which you may have to recreate, make sure it is named the same thing and is in the same location). Now try and download the game again, Steam will recognise the files that are there.

There is no way for you to legally play the games you have bought if the activation codes have already been redeemed. Your only option is to take them back to the person you purchased them from and ask for a refund. The games and their activation codes are locked to the original owners Steam account and cannot be transferred to your account. The discs you bought are effectively worthless as although they contain the digital files for the game they no longer include a license to play the game, this was redeemed by the original owner and they still have the license and are able to play these games even though you now own the physical discs. PC games almost always have one time activation codes, once they have been activated, in this case by the previous owner, there is no way for you to activate them again on your, or any other account. To play these games you need a new activation code, this is why there is no market for second hand PC games at your local game store or anywhere else. Assuming this was a private sale, I don't know how viable an option returning them really is. They probably sold them to you knowing full well they were not playable and you will be relying on them agreeing to give you a refund. If you bought them from a store then you will be in a better position to return them, depending of the laws of your area.

Short answer is no they do not. If you have full control on the filesystem, there are various possible tools, like the NTFS access properties which allow to say precisely what a user can do with a file or a directory. You could also probably use audit events if you have full control on a system. But if the file is in a system that is controlled that the user, the most you can do is to use obfuscation technics, meaning hard to guess ways, but that can certainly circumvented by a voluntary user. For example you could write additional data in different places on the filesystem and on the registry. If all are consistent, then the system is clean. If they are not something has happened and you should ask the a network validation before rewriting the correct pieces of information. BTW, in the early times of Windows, Microsoft produced the same system for its server and client versions, used 2 different registry keys to store the actual configuration and used a system task that continuously controlled that both keys were the same. And SysInternals managed to identify the method and break it... So do not expect to imagine a non breakable trick
