International area codes suddenly appearing in front of my contacts in "Messages" app

The other day I noticed that the international area prefix "+54 9" had started appearing in front of about half of my contacts in Android's native Messenger app. I can still send and receive messages from those contacts (verified with my wife's phone). But it's still annoying, and I worry that I'm getting charged extra by my phone company. When I go into my contacts and try to edit the numbers, the prefix is no longer there, but it shows up again the next time I add them to a texting thread. Has anybody ever experienced this?

It turns out there's a country setting under ⋮ -> Settings -> Your current country. Somehow my country had been switched to Argentina. Posting this here because I came up empty after spending 20 minutes of searching on Google. Hopefully this can help someone else.

Head over to Contacts -> Options Menu -> Display Options. Under choose contacts to display, expand facebook and put a checkbox against All Contacts. The contact will now be saved to your Google Contacts

In MX Explorer settings → More settings → check "allow root" . That should prompt request for root Check if root rights have been given to MX Explorer in Magisk Superuser (if not check logs, if it had been denied)

In the Manifest of the .apk file, developers can specify where they prefer there app to go. When that request can be met (technically), it will. The different possibilities include e.g. no preference set: Goes to "internal storage" preferExternal: Goes to SDCard (if available), else internal storage set to "auto": if the app has widgets or declares services, it goes to internal storage. Otherwise it depends on device settings. See also my answers here and here – the latter answer also details how you can (partially) override this.

I cannot answer all your questions, but I can tell you this, I was also getting a message regularly from WAP_PUSH_SI! with no content in it through my stock Samsung messages app. I would delete it and it would come back, even on airplane mode. So the problem and cause is from another app. That app is Google messenger. If you install a different sms app, then change the new app to your default sms app, then delete the google messenger app, you will never see this message again. I do not know why Google messenger is doing that, but I saw on a forum where someone has sent a complaint with a picture to Google regarding this issue. I know Wap_push_ is generally used to push some sort of promotion or advertising for paid products or services..it is all about money.

Messenger is an SMS application. It can be used to send SMS. Every SMS that are sent from your device are stored somewhere. Other SMS apps can read and write them. Phone is a phone app. It is used to make phone calls. Every calls made from your device are logged somewhere. Other phone apps can read and write to this list. Hangouts is a messaging platform. It uses your Google+ account to send messages to other Hangouts users via their Gmail address. You can also make video calls with it. It is very similar to Skype. However, it is also an SMS app! It can send SMS via your phone number and receive messages from other phones. Hangouts Dialer is a phone app that acts as a plugin to Hangouts. It enables Hangouts to send calls to other phones via your phone number. The interaction is simple : Your SMS are logged somewhere on your phone and only your default SMS app can access them. This is why some, but not all, messages are displayed in Messenger when you actually sent them from Hangouts. If you want every messages to be inside the same app, the obvious solution is to keep Hangouts as the default SMS app. However, don't forget to link your contacts infos in Contacts.

There are a lot of reasons that can cause this: leftover artifacts from uninstalled apps or updates download content from apps (videos/ photos from chat applications, maps for navigation, audio files for language learning apps, etc) currently kept open browser tabs (my chrome had at one point 50 tabs, it reserved ~1.5gb of space even if closed it but kept the tabs) If you do a backup of your contacts and other important data, you can try to reset it to factory settings with a wipe of all sd/ internal memory. If you have a pc to connect your phone by cable AND the knowledge, you could browse the file folders and find the culprit (I would still recommend to clean the files over the phone afterwards but its easier to find what is taking the space) You could buy as a well a bigger sd card as a temporary solution.

The OP originally wrote this in the question, so I'm posting it as an answer so the question stops showing up as "unanswered": I dealt with this for a year or so, as it wasn't super significant, it just bugged me. I use an Xperia Z5, where Sony has their own messaging app clone, which I disabled soon after buying the phone. I used hangouts before finally switching to Android Messages, where I experienced this notification bug. To fix the problem, I simply enabled the built-in Xperia messaging app, and found a sneaky unread message: an undownloaded mms image sent to me a year ago. I deleted the message and the notification bubble went away. I went back to the Android Messages app and the notification bubble didn't come back. For those who have a pure android experience and use the default messaging app, I suggest switching to another sms app. If upon choosing said app as your default sms app, said app shows you the same ghost notification bubble, then you have a ghost message that didn't show up in the Android Messages app for some reason or other. I hope this helps a brave googler somewhere. tl;dr Temporarily switch to another SMS app. You may have a ghost message that isn't showing up in the app you normally use. Delete the ghost message and switch back.

I solved the problem myself. I had a game installed on SD card named, Hambo, I shifted it to phone and all apps, came back to their place, what else change I did earlier was to remove updates of Android market app. So google play was removed and then I did the only change of moving one app. from SD card to phone and my problem was solved. I don't know actual reason of problem but based on what I read some where I think it was may be waiting for some update or change in some installation after the uninstallation of play update. So when I shifted an app to phone, all old things restored at their place.

It's always a good idea to save numbers in canonical format, this ensures that you will be able to call the contacts if you are roaming in an foreign country. You issue is surely related to the Android ROM you are using. You could try to use another ROM. But as I stated before, saving the numbers in a canonical format will be the best solution.

You can recover some files from corrupted MicroSD Card. adoptable-storage is encrypted, it requires the encryption key from the source device. First of all, emojis are added from your keyboard, not Messenger, meaning that it all depends on the keyboard app which you are using. Secondly, most keyboards do not support rearranging the emoticons. You can check out the Frequently used tab, though. Most keyboards have that.

I confirm that the problem persists on a pixel 3a. But, it is kind of reversed. In my case it is a US number and the SMS messages are linked to the number with the country code. But, within the US the messages must be sent without the country code. I find the same as the OP, there is nothing I can do to prevent the country code from being added. Delete the SMS messages, delete the phone book entries. Android is smart enough to always link the number I enter with the old entry that included the country code, recalling it from oblivion. But, it is too dumb to know that the message must be sent without the country code. Also the answers given are missing the point. There is nothing we can do to control whether the country code is added. You can delete the contacts or edit them any way you like, the original form of the number will always be retrieved, with the result that you cannot text that number.

OK. So I called up Sprint. They told me that having WiFi calling enabled doesn't allow for MMS download because it makes the phone use all its bandwidth from the WiFi for calling, none for those messages. So theoretically if you have WiFi but not WiFi calling enabled you should get the messages.
