This example you put is not very good because the variable is always printed after the event that manipulates the variable. A better example would be like this:$i = 0; while ($i < 3) { echo $i++; } This prints:0 1 2 And still:$i = 0; while ($i < 3) { echo ++$i; } This prints:1 2 3 That is, the first form increases the variable after using the current value, and the second increment before using the value.

Your problem seems to be on condition after AND: it will only be true if there are non-nulled values in columns R. Your join is correct - not for this condition, every line in the first table that did not have corresponding in the second would be returned with null values.My first suggestion is to replace this condition with:AND (R.ITEM_REFNUM_QUAL_GID = 'PC_CODE_APPROVER' OR R.ITEM_REFNUM_QUAL_GID IS NULL) I'm not sure if this satisfies your logic, but I have nothing better to suggest - after all, you can only test conditions in the second table if it is not null... (in other words, how will you know if the R.ITEM_REFNUM_QUAL_GID It is PC_CODE_APPROVER if there are no lines in R that marry your line in G? This is an impossible condition, if that is what you seek to stop and review your requirements)
