how to unlock upgrades for the MEC soldiers

I'm on my first play through of enemy within and currently have a MEC unit and am aware that you can upgrade them using the rank, but I was wondering is there a way to either unlock additional armors for the MEC warriors or is there any upgrades that I can get for them in the foundry?

You can unlock stronger suits (more armor HP, bigger will bonus, extra equipment) by researching UFO Power Source and Titan Armor.

Several Foundry projects also benefit MEC Troopers:
- Shaped Armor
- Advanced Servomotors
- Jellied Elerium if using Flamethrower
- MEC Close Combat if using Kinetic Strike Module
- Ammo Conservation
- Alien Grenades if using Grenade Launcher
- Improved Medkit if using Restorative Mist

I'm not sure there are hard numbers on how many points of Will are lost for a given event, but here's a list of possible Will loss causes: Temporary Will loss will clear up at end of mission assuming the soldier survives at all. On the down side, the only way to prevent the loss is to prevent the cause from happening in the first place: Successful use of Mindfray or Panic by a Sectoid Commander or Ethereal Failing a Will check and succumbing to panic Taking enough damage to require healing in the infirmary post-mission Death of another soldier or civilian. (Fun fact: Originally this was "death of an ally" and was also triggered if a mind-controlled alien died. Fortunately, that got patched out) Permanent Will loss only happens when a soldier is critically injured during battle. This doesn't have to be a casualty; even just being knocked down to your last few hit points will trigger the chance (although becoming a casualty has a higher chance of causing it to happen). There is no way to recover permanent Will loss, and only the Secondary Heart gene mod will completely prevent it from happening.

You don't need to do either the meld or the main tutorial. Meld is basically explained in game regardless of whether you do the tutorial, and the main tutorial is the same as it was before.

After reading through the comments in the reddit post you included it seems that the upgrades do not need to be adjacent to the base function to work. Try to group upgrades together and group with main feature for added bonuses. I'm trying to figure this all out just like everyone else but this has seemed to work for me.

9 tiles, put simply. 9 tiles straight is the range at which most weapons' aim changes. 6 diagonal, if I'm reading this Google Sheet correctly. Shotguns get a proportional bonus if less than that distance. Proportional penalty if greater than that distance. Ranging from +52% to -40%. Sniper rifles get a proportional penalty if less than that distance (up to -24%). Despite the game already giving the appearance that you should be able to play the class by showing it in the character creation screen and having class-specific loot dropping already for it, the Crusader class is currently locked and will be unlocked for those who purchase the expansion when the Reaper of Souls expansion is released.

You can't, EA/DICE took this feature out for some reason. The extra slots on the Battlelog are your other soldiers on consoles. If you're already playing on a console you can just set up a new account. The online pass seems to work in a per console manner (whether or not this was intended). This will only likely be beneficial on PS3 though since setting a new account up on Xbox Live will cost you. Source

Soldier quality is influenced by a few factors (see my question here), some of which you can directly influence. As you progress in the game, enemy soldiers will tend to have higher skill rankings. You can quickly spot skilled soldiers by scanning everyone you meet - you can even interrogate enemies and they might reveal the location of a specialist. Finally, you can get higher rated volunteers by having a high amount of heroism, but I haven't seen any S+/S++ recruited this way. Now, how can you specifically get the best of the best? Well, S and S+ soldiers can be bought with PF grade points. These can be definitely earned through the PF virtual league (you do simulated battles against other PFs - success is based on your combat, security, and research ratings), and probably through other means (but I can't confirm any). You can also kidnap S/S+/S++ soldiers from a rival's FOB, but this may prompt retaliation from them. Finally, on the question of the game "demoting" soldiers: This is possible. One of the abilities soldiers can have is "boaster" - your goggles will overstate their abilities. It's usually only by a level or two in my experience, but I've heard some reports of it being by more than 2 levels. Be cautious about any "boasters" you extract - they won't be as good as they said they were.

I don't believe there are any stun-capable weapons/soldiers in the demo - which is weird since they make a big deal out of asking you to capture one alive. In the full game soldiers have specific gear that allows them to stun and capture aliens (although from what I read, it ain't easy!)

I assume you mean Rift ability? It is only one that seems to match your description. Anyway, the damage is calculated by taking the casters Will score and the targets Will score and deducing targets score from casters and using remainder to see how much damage is done. Unless my own studies are wrong, it deals base damage of 4 and then additional +1 for every 5 Will left after deducting victims Will from users Will. This means, that targets with low Will (such as Mutons and especially robotics) suffer a lot, but units with very high will will suffer less. As such, for example, if the caster has 100 will and opponent has 80, then when the rift hits it's going to do 4 + (100-80)/5 = 4 + 20/5 = 4 + 4 = 8 damage. tl;dr Less Will the target has, more damage it takes. I try to see if I can find the exact math from the game files, but I doubt it. If anyone has the exact formula, feel free to say it.

So this is definitely a suppression bug. It seems that if you suppress an alien and then that alien is killed the soldier doing the suppressing will being bugged. They will lose the ability to take cover (and therefore hunker down) as well as shoot or heal friendlies. HOWEVER if you can heal yourself OR throw a smoke grenade it seems this will snap your soldier back to reality and he will begin functioning normally. So you should be careful whenever you are doing suppression. Be sure you have another ability like heal or smoke or missiles to fix it if it occurs or just don't attack any aliens once you have suppressed them.

If you are poisoned and run through a poison cloud, the poison counter resets. You will get the "Poisoned" popup again, even though you are already poisoned.

Have a heavy learn 'shredder rocket' and 'heat ammo'... Hit the sectopod with the shredder rocket, so it takes more damage from hits over the next few turns. Then have the heavy with 'heat ammo', which allows it do double the damage to robots, attack it. Furthermore, if your heavy has 'bullet storm', then he can fire at the sectopod twice.

Yep, you need to go to the 3DS camera and merge the faces. That's the requirement for unlocking the Bonus Level. The steps for doing so are as follows: Go to the 3DS Camera. Flip the switch on the bottom right corner of the screen. On the menu that appears, tap the camera icon (located on the rightmost side). On the next menu, select the head with a question mark icon. Find someone (or something) and take a picture of it. Do it a few times and it should unlock the bonus stage. If it doesn't, try the following: Look to see if the UFO brings some merged faces over to the main stages. If so, play that stage, and locate and destroy the UFO with the merged face. This will "rescue" that face. After successfully completing the stage with the rescuing, you should unlock the Bonus Level (provided you completed all previous stages). Hope this answer helps!
