Is being flanked worse than not being behind cover at all?

I understand that being flanked has a negative impact on defense. But is having the cover on the wrong site (opposite of the enemy) worse than standing completely uncovered, or the same?

To check that I interpret the question correctly: I think you are asking whether there is any difference between

Enemy --- Player

and

Enemy --- Player --- Cover

The answer to that is "no", in either case the enemy will have an increased critical hit chance and the cover's defense will not apply.

Yes, an opponent can deploy from behind your buildings if they are placed on the edge of a map. On the official (and new) forum, a user asked why so many high-level players were building their bases in corners. This was the response: You can place troops in the corner. There is a small sliver of land that runs around the whole map. The reason a lot of people do this is because when you drop troops there, they have no choice but to be bunched together and the mortars and rockets destroy everything quite easily. (Source)

You can build a Thermo Generator over the "Steam" areas. These offer power far more efficiently than Power Stations, as they give +20 power instead of +6.

Go up to the door, directly to the right of the door is a chain on the wall. If you can't find it I'll post a SS when I get home. Edit: If you zoom in on your SS you can see it, snip here. Took me a while to find it as well, and I did look for it, I didn't find it till I came back the second time.

An Army Of Four is one of 30 achievements added in XCOM Enemy Within. These achievements will still display on the Steam interface but can't be completed without owning Enemy Within, even if you do what it tells you.

tl;dr: It's the average amount of defense your units were receiving from cover at the end of each turn. At the end of each of your turns, the game records how many living soldiers you have, and what type of cover each of your units is in (none, low/half, or standing/full). These are added and stored as CoverCount and CoverTotal respectively. For CoverTotal, each type counts as follows: No cover - 0 Low/half cover - 1 Standing/full cover - 2 At the end of the mission there's a fairly simple calculation: CoverPercentage = CoverTotal * 20 / CoverCount This represents the fact that low cover adds 20 defense, and high cover adds 40. Note that CoverTotal is added to based on the best possible cover for your soldier. Your soldier can be flanked by 6 aliens, but as long as they're standing next to a full cover tile, they're going to count as full cover for the purposes of this calculation.

This information is so hard to come by so I'm posting here in response. The first quest comes very early in the game. I rejected the quest, and it never came back even after my whole squad is on end game armor. Started another game, and this time I accepted and finished the first mission. And then for the 2nd and 3rd quest, these come ridiculously early as well and you probably won't beat it with your newbie squad with stick weapons, so skip them and do it later. The council SPAMS you with the quest, but there's no penalty whatsoever for not completing the quest when it shows up. In short, don't skip the first mission, the following ones can be skipped.

Players wake up as Chell, in Portal 1. The game is quite short, however, and there is not much in the way of character progression. Prior to these events, there is not much, in the way of back story. Chell wakes up inside of a Relaxation Vault, inside the Aperture Science laboratory. She is informed that she is a test subject. Using the Portal Gun and the Advanced Knee Replacement, Chell completes the tests, with the promise of being rewarded cake for completing the exercise. Instead of cake, GLaDOS attempts to dump Chell into an incinerator. Chell manages to escape, and goes on to defeat GLaDOS. Moments after her escape from the Aperture Science laboratory, Chell is captured, and taken back into the laboratory. At this point, the Lab Rat comic takes over. Long story short, an escaped engineer by the name of Doug Rattman witnesses Chells escape and quick recapture. After realising Chell is to be put inside an Extended Relaxation Vault, which has lost its life support capabilities due to the explosion, Rattman patches Chell's vault into the reserved power grid. As a result, Chell survives suspended animation, and wakes up to the events of Portal 2. While there is not much backstory to Chell, prior to Portal 1, there is speculation that she is the daughter of an Aperture Science employees. This is hinted at in Portal 1, where GLaDOS remarks ""Well done, remember, the Aperture Science Bring Your Daughter to Work Day is the perfect time to have her tested.", and again in Portal 2, where a "Bring Your Daughter To Work Day" science-fair entry features a potato-generator experiment, signed by Chell.

If you capture several Outsiders, you will have all the shards in your inventory. But the most frustrating thing is that you will not be able to sell the shards. So you will have the shards stuck at your inventory for the rest of the game. Outsiders will stop appearing only after you finish the mission that comes after you research the shard, but you still won't be able to sell the shards. Since they are harder to capture that other low level aliens, but have the same weapon (light plasma rifle), I would advise capturing floaters or thin men instead of outsiders if you want the weapons, as they will not appear in your inventory and reduce clutter.

The first thing you should do is, as you yourself point out, build satellites. The next one is to make workshops, and get as many engineers as possible (prefer missions where the reward is engineers above anything else), so that you can manufacture more satellites. This is really the only thing worth focusing in the first month. And keep in mind that if you slip too much on the high panic/low income slide, you won't be able to get back. Other momentary slips (like crappy interceptors = can't intercept all UFO's, crappy squad = can't finish difficult missions) you can recover when they hit you, but the panic/income is a one way street. That's why I think you should proritize satellites and workshops at the start (and really, for the better part of the game) Other stuff like weapons, squad, interceptors, even research are good enough with their star-up allocations for the first month: the squad is ok, their default weapons and equipment are fine. Maybe research S.C.O.P.E. and build one or two for your snipers, it gives you +10% accuracy and it's cheap enough to research & build. Other than that, investing in to fancier weapons/equipment in the first month will not bring any actual bonuses, and you will suffer from lack of satellites if you do that, and that equals lack of money and increased panic the interceptors are really ok: they are tough enough to handle first-month UFOs. Maybe you can spread out a bit and add more interceptors once you raise a satellite over a previously unmonitored continent so that you can shoot down UFOs over there as well, but for the very first month you shouldn't buy more than 2 extra interceptors research is fine, you'll dig into that later, once you have established a steady income. And, as with interceptors, investing a lot into research in the very first month can't really bring you much benefit.

No, you can't directly attack mind-controlled aliens without explosives. You can try and move out of range so that it will have to spend its turn closing in on you, giving you a free shot, or putting it into a disadvantageous position, such as being out in the open while surrounded by several of your operatives in high cover on overwatch). If there is fire on the map you may try to roast it alive, but it probably won't contirbute significant damage. Note that a mind-controlled alien dying, explosives* or not, will result in its equipment being given to you at the end of mission, as if it was actually part of your squad. Also, higher-end enemies tend to have grenades or, in the case of Ethereals, an AOE psi attack, so you don't have to waste your own explosives killing them. For example, 3 perfectly healthy Elite Mutons under mind control can be made to kill themselves by having them huddle together and throw grenades at their own feet. *In Enemy Within, explosives will destroy the equipment of mind-controlled aliens if they kill the alien (but not if they only wound it).

Both of the thumb sticks on the XBOX 360 controller can be pressed down as buttons - they will noticeably click under your thumb when this is done correctly. So, I think the game wants you to click the left thumb stick. I've not played XCOM with a controller to know for sure, but since the icon tip is the term LS ("Left Stick", as you guess, sounds right) in a circle with a down arrow inside the circle, I think this is the most likely answer.

An enemy counts as flanked when you attack from a direction their cover does not block. This can be spotty at times and it is also based on line of sight of your soldiers and the enemy. You can check how flanked something might be by rotating the camera to the direction the enemy is coming from and seeing how much of your soldier is out in the open. For example an alien was counted as flanked for me once when he rested against a gas station counter on one side but had the little thin arm that blocks you from moving on the other side. The arm was so thin that it didn't count as cover and he was considered flanked. Finally enemies such as chrysalids, muton berserkers or any other enemy that does not use cover cannot be flanked. Only enemies who actively rest against an object to use as cover can be flanked.

First and foremost, always try to be aware of the times that you're not getting exp. You need to be within 1300 range of a dying creep to get the experience, which is about the same distance as a pudge hook or a blink dagger range. Play a few games with the sole target of getting as much exp as possible, so not wandering between lanes too much - use scrolls, and make the most of every creep wave. If you're playing mid - make sure that you push the wave into the enemy tower before looking for runes, this forces the enemy to defend or lose 3-4 creeps of exp while you have time to pick up a rune without losing any. If you check for a rune (or worse, go back to base) and are missing exp on the mid lane you're putting yourself in a huge disadvantage. On those level based heroes it is critical that you get as much exp as possible. Learn to mind game your opponent in terms of last hitting, to put them off when they try to deny (or better harass them off the lane). If you're playing a safe lane supportive role, make sure that any creep pulls you do are double stacks, or pull throughs to a 2nd camp - not just single stacks. Single stacks cause the lanes to push to the enemy tower, meaning you have to hang further back from the creep wave to not risk your life, and this makes it much easier for the enemy to zone you out of the experience range. Always carry a tp scroll from as early as possible - teleporting between lanes rather than walking is 100% worth it if you are missing out on a lot of XP. Ideally, teleport in when the enemy tries to gank one of your lanes, and use your burst damage potential to turn the ganks around - this will give you huge boosts in xp. Also needless to say, avoid deaths as much as possible. Learn all the best ward spots and keep as good map coverage. The best way to not get ganked is to not be there - and ideally make your enemy waste time rotating between lanes as well. You can't remove a satellite uplink unless you have the capacity to support your existing satellites.
