Katrina, It is possible to include some important approaches and goals for software testing that tend to be beneficial in creating effective test case scenarios in a wide variety of testing situations. They include: Don't repeat yourself (e.g., keep scenarios "DRY"); don't repeat combinations of test inputs more than you need to because you would find out more with the limited time you have if you tested as many different combinations of test inputs as you can in the limited time you have available. Maximize variation (the flip-side of the "DRY" principle). Changing things as much as possible between each test case is an excellent way to trigger as many defects as possible in as few tests a possible. Cover as much as possible in a manageable number of tests (because you'll never have time to test everything). Use basic concepts like Equivalence Class Partitioning and Boundary Value analysis to focus your tests on where the defects are most likely to be. Have an easy and maintainable approach to ensure that you're testing for all of the requirements that key stakeholders have told you that they want tested - but go far beyond that "minimum" list to "earn your keep" as a value-adding software tester. Systematically and intelligently prioritize what combinations of inputs get tested vs. what combinations will not get tested using methods such as pairwise testing and/or combinatorial testing that are designed to maximize the amount of coverage you can achieve with the limited time you have available to test. (Test design tools, as mentioned below, can often be a big help here). With a tip of the hat to Laura for her good comment (below)... Be sure to include tests based on ideas gathered from reviewing bug reports. Even if bugs have been found and fixed, bugs tend to "cluster" and places in the code that have broken before are more likely than other code to misbehave in the future. A complete list of "best practices" is not possible to cram into a stackexchange answer though. Accordingly, if you're serious about advancing your understanding from here about how to write effective test scenarios, I'd suggest: Reading books about effective strategies for software test design. There are relatively few around, but I would highly recommend these 3: A Practitioner's Guide to Software Test Design by Lee Copeland Essential Software Test Design by Torbjörn Ryber and The superb recently released book by Elisabeth Hendrickson called "Explore It!" Try out software test design tools like our company's Hexawise tool and others listed on sites like pairwisetesting.com and pairwise.org. Learn their benefits and limitations. While they can be a big help to quickly generate powerful sets of test scripts when they are used correctly, in order to be used to their full potential, they rely on the critical thinking skills of thoughtful testers who understand the fundamentals of solid software test design principles. Corner Case Testing: When the system breaks only for a specific valid input eg: Imagine a function getcar() that that takes a number and all numbers from 1-5 are valid inputs: But, getcar(wheel=?) function works with all numbers but fails for getcar(wheel=3) Edge Case Testing: Here we check that the system handles extreme values of valid limits. For the above example, the valid edge case scenarios are getcar(wheel=1) and getcar(wheel=5) Boundary Case Testing: Here we check that the system handles boundary values around the edge case values. so in the above example, edge case values are 1 and 5. So, the boundary cases would be 0,2,4,6

I can't speak for the sites that you mentioned, but anything that you do which gets you to understand how people use products and services will help you learn more about UX. The closer you get to users, the better - and doing testing is about as close as you will get. However, to get the most out of it follow these steps: Analyse what you will be testing and try work out what will be problematic for users. Test the product / service and see where the problems were, and where you thought problems would be but were not. Try to understand why things weren't exactly as you expected. Follow these simple steps, and you will most definitely become better at UX.

A procedure defines a process: an established or official way of doing something A case is only a single item in a process and not a process on its own. There is a thin-line between test-procedure and or test-case. As both define steps how to execute testing work. I would argue that the procedure would be higher-level explaining why, what and how we are testing, more like a strategy, a way of working. While a test-case is a detailed isolated piece of functionality being tested. Maybe it is better to call the test-procedure a test-plan or test-strategy. This shows a clearer difference between the two. As with all terminology it depends. There is not a official defined definition. When in doubt ask in your company or team what they mean with it. Yes, most companies should use both. We have a high-level testing strategy describing how we build high-quality products. There is also a separate strategy for each of our four products. We also group tests in test-suites and execute test-cases manual and automated. Although most if not all our test-cases are automated.

I suggest not to overcomplicate your project and have fun. If you professor want to have a "hands on experience" he should terminate the semester earlier, change the requirements randomly, and change the projects members You can experience with how the startup community works, though. Start setting up the web server, do ugly pages with limited functionality (almost like a wireframe), do not bother much with Computer Science things as highly optimized algorithms, and do not bother with technology (you'll need the last when you want to scale your product). Do something that works. Check if it works for others too not just your teams (we call it user test). If it works and your test subjects like it, you can make it pretty and working (add user experience). Now you can add the next ugly thing, and do the testing again. This is called iterative development. In real life a small but working portion of functionality is more appreciated than a lot of features that do not work. Again, check your feature list and pick the one you cannot continue without, you do the feature quickly (e.g. login), check if it works (test), make it pretty (but do not over do it, max one day - called refactoring), go to step 1 In case you face technical difficulties, and you are not making progress in a couple of days, just cut corners. The point is to get to step 3 as fast as you can so that you can validate your work. You can sort out difficulties later in step 4. Additionally, with approach you'll know where you are with your project. Let's assume you have 12 things to do, and you one with this style in a week. You know that about 12 weeks you are going to be done. Ok, this is not really true, but at least you get a sense of progress and a bit of forecasting.

When a new project development starts in an organization when does the testing role come in? It depends. It depends on the company, industry, development approach, etc. Two commonly referred to methods for development are Waterfall and Agile In Waterfall you do the testing once the development of a feature is done. In Agile you do the testing before* and during development. In your situation the best course of action is usually a long detailed conversation with developers about what testing makes sense to cover the areas of Unit, Functional, User Acceptance and Exploratory testing. * by writing failing tests that will pass once the functionality has actually been created.

Having numbered columns is an anti pattern. Your Game table shows it. The relationship between Game and Player is many-to-many, even though the cardinality is fixed from a game's perspective. Resolve the problem by adding a new table ("Participant"?), with foreign keys to both Game and Player. To see how it helps, try writing a query to count the number of games an individual was in using each design. The relationships to Player Round Result should be to this new table, not to Game and Player separately. This ensures a Player must necessarily have been in a Game to have a result recorded. The foreign key columns in Player Round Result will have the same names and types, but the foreign key constraint declaration will reference a different target. Further, I'd suggest the table currently called Player would be better as Person, since the values it holds are for the human per se. The new table I suggest above would be well-named as Player as it is all about a person participating in a game.

What are you testing for? Tools: Typo's are easy, there are spell-checkers for that. Regression is fairly easy as well, a good compare tool will reveal all changes between versions. PDF validation has tooling as well. In between: Basic info like the correct version CAN be done by scripting but likely is faster manually. Manual: Layout. Underlying all the principles of design and UX tools and techniques is understanding users - the psychology of how people think and see - how they make decisions, what motivates them, what engages them, how memories are strengthened, how fallible we are and how mistakes are made. Beginners like to know how something matters to them, so introducing topics that relate to how they can see, test and understand their own behaviour is a great way to gently ease them in. Once they understand a bit about how the brain is wired and that much of people's behaviour is subconscious, then you can use that as a foundation for the reasoning behind all the other principles that appeal to that. So for example, teaching people about desire lines - and why paths are worn in the grass to cut off a corner of two paths is a real world example that beginners can see and understand, but this can lead on to topics like paths of least resistance, barriers to progress, Ockhams Razor (and similar laws from Einstein, Newton and Aristotle), white space and clutter, figure and ground, signal to noise ratios, gestalt principles and affordance - all without getting too entrenched.

I found the service that I was looking for by searching my browser history - http://appkitbox.com/en/testkit The best part I like about them is for a relatively inexpensive $10/hour I can rent any device and test my app on it. (I am in no way related to this service that I am recommending). Hope this helps the community at large - those who are developing mobile apps.

There's lots. For starters, what software do you have on the machine that you're using right now? Any reason to not try testing any of it? You could always go grab a copy of some open source software. Nightly releases are great for practice. Is there any approach in particular that you're interested in? Seeing that you say that you're looking for web testing, my own personal recommendation would be to install some sort of web debugger. Since you're using mac, Fiddler is out of the question, however, it appears as though CharlesProxy is an option. It should help give you a good understanding of what's going on under the hood while you're browsing/interacting. I'm not entirely certain about apple products, but, if you have a windows machine, you can use the web platform installer to install applications locally to test on as well. Furthermore, spending some time browsing some of the question/answers here, as well as places like sqaforums and software testing club can give some great insight.

My general rule of thumb is the same if you are automating or running/writing the tests manually. If a dependent class/script changed would your tests fail as a result If the answer is yes, its not appropriate to reference the script. If the answer is no, then it may well be fine. For example. Script 1 (login success) Go to login page www.12345.com/login Enter Username "admin" Enter Password "password" Script 2 (click button) Run "Script 1 (login success)" Click button In this example, if I were to update "Script 1" with new valid login credentials then "Script 2" would remain unchanged. That would make it an appropriate candidate to be referenced. Other potential questions to ask when considering referencing other test steps; Is the referenced step always required? For example, if i login in a previous test then will you still be able to follow the test steps? Does referencing a script add additional complexity? Referencing one consistent test can be viable but if you separate out 4 or 5 then it can become very complicated to follow Does referencing a script save time in execution? If you only need to login in 2 out of 100 tests, then referencing the other scenario might actually take longer than following it in a linear manner.

With so much going on, I think you need to narrow what are very broad fields and focus on certain topics within them. "Learning UX design" is not something that actually defines your goals very well. UX practitioners themselves will argue (to little effect) what UX design actually consists of (See image below). I suggest you find a topic from the image below that sounds like it might be of interest and start by focusing on that, so that: you do not feel swamped by what turns out to be a huge field you can more easily define your goals divide and conquer smaller chunks at a time assess your own interests in a topic and perhaps move on to another I can't really speak for web development, but a similar approach might also work here. I would also add that knowing more about UX is an excellent grounding not just for web development but development of software, products and services generally as they all involve people! For example, reading The Universal Principles of Design allows you to dip in to many different design principles that provide a great foundation for designing and creating pretty much anything. If you want to stay abreast of what's hot, check out the programme for popular ux and web conferences, looking for talks that sound interesting to you and just read around and investigate them. Is there a difference between testing on a 32- and 64-bit OS? The difference is very small. It exists for C ++ (although problems arise very rarely), but for Sharp, I can't even come up with a scenario to have problems. In general, in your case, you can probably not bother with this. If I test a product under, for example, Windows 7, should I also test it with the Service Pack installed? There is definitely no point in wasting time with a service pack. Even with every system, you don't need to test. Choose 2-3 key systems, let's say the smallest supported by your program, up-to-date, and preferably something in between. For example, WinXP-Win7-Win10. In other systems, it is enough to simply check for problem areas - for example, in Win8 there is no Start button, for it it is worth making an alternative access to the program group. We checked it once, figured out the specific nuances, then it is not necessary to test it further. Where can I find ISO images of the required OS versions for testing purposes (virtualization in VMware)? Only on MSDN, of course. Well, or in some non-kosher places, which we will not name.
