There are several ways to pick up items in Smash Bros... Standing near the item and pressing the attack button (A on default controls) The following applies to all items except Grass and heavy items1 In midair using the grab button (Z on default controls) - Melee onward In midair using an air dodge (pressing shield - L/R) - Brawl onward Input dash attack or any aerial within 5 frames of coming into contact with an item - Brawl onward Input tilt attack within 2 frames of coming into contact with an item - Ultimate onward (Ultimate also changed Brawl's 5-frame window to be 2 frames for dash attack and aerials) There are, however, only three ways to drop an item Throw the item Press attack or grab and a direction (or just attack alone to throw forward)2 "Z-drop" (named for the default grab button, Z) On the ground, pressing grab alone will have the character toss the item lightly up and behind them. In the air however, pressing grab with no direction will drop the item downward. The important differentiating factor between a Z-drop and a downward throw is that Z-drops have almost no lag. Meaning you can use a Z-drop to combo (see below) Item drop chance When your character is hit while holding an item, there is a random chance they will drop the item. This is computed on the damage of the attack hitting you. From Brawl onwards, that chance is [Base Dmg] / 70 (so Falcon Punch, which has base dmg of 25%, will have 25/70 = ~35.7% chance of making you drop an item). More fun with item grabs So what if you want to do an aerial attack while holding an item? Since Z-drop comes out on the first frame (insanely fast!), and you can also use an aerial to re-grab an item... you can actually Z-drop, and then perform your aerial immediately to re-catch the item! This is called an "IZAC" (Instant Z-Drop Aerial Catch). Putting this all into practice with an item that does a small amount of knockback makes for some crazy combos! 1. The exhaustive list of heavy items is as follows... Barrel, Barrel Cannon (Melee only), Blast Box, Crate, Party Ball, Rolling Crate. 2. There are a few edge-cases where this will do an attack instead of an item throw. Namely, if Peach/Daisy are floating (holding down or jump while in the air to hover), they cannot throw an item. Given your response to the comments, I would say the answer is "whoever you feel most interested/comfortable with". Most characters are very similar or only have a few new moves, so for just learning the basics of Smash any character should be ok. A lot of skills are transferable between these two games, even if the details of general mechanics differ quite a lot. There are major differences in some specific situations, but I doubt they will come across as important unless you're relatively experienced in Smash. Some characters have more substantial changes between Brawl and Ultimate, mostly due to reworks done in Smash 4. These include for example Link, Diddy Kong, Zelda, Meta Knight, Falco, Yoshi, Ice Climbers, Sonic, Bowser, R.O.B., and Olimar. For learning the game I also don't have any specific recommendation. Each character has its strengths and weaknesses, and you'll find out about them as you improve. Some people feel that characters with multiple mid-air jumps are easier to control at first, but it's ultimately down to preference. Combos are quite different between Brawl and Ultimate, but outside of tournament play they rarely are the deciding factor of matches.

Unfortunately, this is not possible Custom controls are tied to names in Smash Ultimate. You can setup custom controls for a name and when you select that name, your controls will be mapped accordingly. However, you cannot select a name for the training mode CPU, which, as you've seen, means you're kicked into the default controls. Ultimate, unlike every other smash game, does allow you to set the controls for a player with no name (or the "default controls"). When I read this question, I thought that'd be your solution. However, even after setting up the no-name controls, training mode CPU control still reverts to the system default. Some alternatives for training... Usually, control in training mode is there for a friend to quickly get into position or jump a certain way so you can test something as the first player (which is why I'd guess they didn't bother letting you setup controls). If you want finer control over what the CPU's do and you're willing to do some work to get there, I'd recommend looking into one of the many "training mods" (like this one https://github.com/captainl/training-arduino). This is what I've seen a lot of pros using. It requires an arduino to fake controller inputs, but will let you record sequences or constantly DI in specific ways. It's a bummer, but this seems to be the best option for training mode at the moment. The training mode feature has always been sorely lacking in Smash games.

TL:DR: Attack from below if possible, shield, or use projectiles/disjoints to get to Mythra's hurtbox. Before we get into counterplay, take a close look at the hitboxes on this move, courtesy of ultimateframedata.com (click the image for a higher quality gif): There are a few things to notice here... Photon Edge doesn't have any hitboxes below Mythra (despite the flashy sword animations) Photon Edge has a LOT of end-lag--18 frames, or almost a third of a second. This animation looks cool as all heck Look closely at the above gif, the gray body in the middle of the screen moving from left to right is Mythra's hurtbox. That's what she'll use for hit-detection on any moves you throw out, NOT the animations of her teleporting. All of this ties together to give you three main options depending on your character and the situation. Attack from below if possible If the Mythra starts this move in the air, you should be able to very easily get underneath them. The move from start to finish lasts 100 frames (1.66 sec). Since you don't need to worry about the slashes from underneath, you can use all that time to position yourself and punish accordingly. Shield is your friend A combination of very little shield pressure and a LOT of endlag means that shield is the perfect counter here. Not only does the move barely reduce shield, the last hit only has 3 frames of shield stun while Mythra will be in 18 frames of endlag. This should give you ample time to punish with something as strong and slow as a forward smash. If you notice the Mythra is using this move a lot when they begin to approach, just hold shield when you see them coming. Punish the hurtbox with projectiles/disjoints As stated above, Mythra's hurtbox moves slowly forward in line with where she began the move. The individual slashes also will not clank with any other moves. This means that you can easily throw out a projectile to knock her out of Photon Edge. Or, if you have the timing down and a disjointed move (like a sword attack), you can swing through Photon Edge to hit her hurtbox. The behavior in this case is the same as it was in Smash 4. That is, it'll allow you to play against a computer player (CPU) who is playing as the DLC fighter, but you won't be able to play as the DLC fighter yourself. The biggest problem you'll run into with this secrecy is that Mii Fighters only show on the character selection screen if you've created one of that type. So, for example, if you create a Mii Swordfighter when before he had no Mii Fighters on his system, the selection screen may look like this: Notice how there's just a Mii Swordfighter there at the end. If he's used to seeing the selection screen without, then this may be a dead giveaway. So be careful! There seem to be numerous varying opinions on which Mii fighter is best: Gunner, Swordfighter, or Brawler. My bf mains Bayonetta, and will sometimes use Dark Pit or Dr. Mario as alternatives - so which do you think would be the best choice for someone who uses these characters? If he mains Bayonetta, Dark Pit and Dr. Mario, it sounds like your boyfriend is a brawler. All of those characters want to be up close and personal so they can combo the crap out of you. They all only have one real projectile, and that's only used to let them get close, so Gunner's out. None of them have swords or disjoints for carefully spacing approaches/attacks, so Swordfighter's out. Therefore, I'd suggest Mii Brawler as the best fit for your boyfriend from what you've told us. Brawler (like the name implies), does best when he's right up in your face. Some of his movesets also include a single projectile to help him get close, just like your boyfriend's characters. I want a technical answer from the source code Very well. As you can see, only one set of parameters exists for Hero's shield, not one per costume.

The other answer is correct that Olimar and Alph's hurtboxes are the same. When looking at Olimar vs. Alph, it's important to note that Olimar's hurtboxes themselves aren't actually perfectly accurate to the character model. The translucent bubble around his helmet is his actual hurtbox: From the shape, it should be apparent how it's slightly 'looser' around the character model in a way that would allow both his and Alph's appearance to be shaped to fit within it. SSB is always as a series that's played slightly less accurate with hurtboxes and hitboxes when necessary, often leaving out things like hands, feet, or tails without hurtboxes, or conversely having a hurtbox that extends slightly past the character's actual body. While it's slightly noticeable in stills or gifs, I've never felt to affect the actual play and, while I'm not a pro player by a long shot, I've never seen the community take issue with that aspect of the characters either. General consensus seems to be that they're close enough to feel fair.

There is no real way to guarantee you'll beat the challenge, but there is a way to guarantee you'll unlock it (explained below). If you want to legitimately beat the challenge, these are the important parts to know about: (in case this is not obvious) you can use any character for the challenge. You do not need to use the Duck Hunt Duo at all. The challenge is not limited to only the boss fight. It applies for the entirety of the final level. This includes the platforming section at the very beginning. You are absolutely not allowed to die. At all. You can get the challenge on any difficulty, including Easy. You do not need to restart WoL if you fail the challenge. In fact, you can experience all 3 endings without restarting WoL. Some tips to make it easier: You can attack Galeem and Dharkon during the platforming section. Hit them enough, and they'll leave. Equipping spirits of the same franchise gives them a boost in power. The higher the power, the more damage you deal, and the less you receive in return. [This was accurate about a year ago and needs to be reconfirmed] If you know how to handle Olimar, for some reason his aerials are both weapon and physical attacks. As a result, you can double your attack bonus via both the skill tree, and your spirits. If done properly, you can defeat Giga Bowser in as few as 3 shots. If the challenge truly is too hard, you can still unlock it using a hammer. Simply select the hammer (if you have one), and then select the challenge you want to unlock. You can earn more hammers by unlocking a certain number of challenges (either legitimately, or using the hammer). Obviously, hammers are limited, so keep them for challenges you cannot beat yourself.

Agreeing with senpai, alternate costumes and associated different animations do not change the hurtboxes (and hitboxes) for the characters. However, I want to back this statement with a quote from the Smash Wiki page. Pikachu, Pokémon Trainer, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Robin, Corrin, Inkling, and Byleth all have male and female variants; and Olimar and Bowser Jr. have model swaps that change them into different characters with different names, complete with corresponding voice and Announcer clips, though like all other alternate costumes, they bear no gameplay differences. And also this previous Arqade answer, which states that it is mechanically impossible for alternate costumes to have different hurtboxes (and hitboxes).

The Nintendo Switch Online account comes with some free DLC for Super Smash Bros. When you choose to redeem this offer (or redownload it) it puts a shortcut to the actual game on the home screen. It also downloads data that consumes 1.8 GB of storage which according to the software settings is mostly a game update but 0.2 MB is the actual DLC. I’ve managed to remove it by going into options and deleting the software, like you would for any other software.

Sorry, but there is no way to change this that I am aware of after checking the settings. You could maybe try modding your switch, but that's pretty risky and a lot of work for a small aesthetic.

I suppose you would be technically correct to say that spirit crits and Hero smash crits "stack multiplicatively". But it would be more correct to say that they are entirely separate mechanics that do not directly interact with each other: Spirit crits give a percent chance (5% or 12%) for any attack's damage to be multiplied. Hero's smash crits give a percent chance (12.5%) for his smash attacks to use a different set of hitboxes that deal more damage to enemies and have other minor attribute differences.

These refer to the Figure Player's style or personality. There are 25 possibilities depending on how the FP is trained and which spirits you use on it: Cool reflects a playstyle where the FP keeps its cool, being rather defensive and playing safely. Light reflects a playstyle where they will often use their projectile attack and try to rack up fast damage with minor combos and rush-down strategies. Both Light and Cool use aerial attacks too. You can find a guide to all 25 styles here.

No Sakurai mentioned in the direct that the grenade is "football shaped" so it will bounce "in an unpredictable manner." I've tried getting it to bounce differently by jumping and shooting the grenade at different times, but it seems to always start bouncing slow (and then speed up at different rates depending on the angles). I also tried holding B vs. pressing it quickly, which will work for things like Isabelle's fishing rod/palutena's side-B/etc...but to no avail with Banjo. However... If you want to quickly get a grenade in your opponent's face, I'd suggest doing it like this: When you do the down-B in the air, you stall for a second. If you point the control stick to match the trajectory of the grenade and then press Z to grab it in the air, you can immediately throw it! The timing and movement are a little bit tight, so it might take some practice, but once you have it down to muscle memory, it should be pretty simple. (Note this contain spoilers) To determine whether a spirit is light or dark, light spirits have a light-coloured circle around their space on the map, and dark spirits have a dark-coloured circle. In the Final Battle, the light spirits are on the left and the dark spirits on the right, but the coloured circle helps for determining cases in the middle on the world map. The full list of light/dark spirits is shown below: Back to the question, there are two bad endings. One is where Darkhon wins (obtained after beating Galeem alone), and another where Galeem wins (obtained after beating Darkhon alone). In the Final Battle, there are multiple ways to get one of the bad endings: Beat a relatively high number of light spirits compared to dark spirits. This will open a path to Galeem letting you fight and beat it alone. When you beat enough spirits, a path to Galeem will open and an in-game message will appear to confirm this. Beating more dark spirits instead lets you fight Darkhon alone. If you've beaten all the light spirits and the path still hasn't appeared, it's probably because you've beaten too many dark spirits as well, in which case this option is no longer possible. After freeing both Master Hand and Crazy Hand, and then defeating 50 puppet fighters with Master Hand (the Master Hand Mob Battle, only available when the ratio of light to dark spirits defeated is approximately equal), three paths open up. One to Galeem alone, one to Darkhon alone, and one to both together. Once this is done, the 3 paths will always remain irrespective of the spirits you've beaten.

Stick Sensitivity is a deceptively named control option. It has nothing to do with run/walk/dash sensitivity, platform drops, stick distance/movement/precision, or anything like that. Stick Sensitivity only controls the frame window that differentiates between a Smash and a Tilt. Low stick sensitivity = easier Tilts High stick sensitivity = easier Smashes After you "stick flick" your left analog, if you press "A" you will input a directional attack. Stick Sensitivity adjusts the frame window that determines if that attack will be a Smash or Tilt. Press "A" in the next X frames = Smash Press "A" after those X frames = Tilt Lengthening this frame window results in Smashes being easier to input and Tilts more deliberate. Stick Sensitivity Frames | L | N | H | F-Smash | 5 | 6 | 7 | U-Smash | 3 | 4 | 5 | D-Smash | 3 | 4 | 5 | Your optimal Stick Sensitivity will primarily depend on whether you set your C-Stick / Right Analog to input Smash or Tilt. You will want to set Stick Sensitivity so that the opposite class of attacks is easier to perform with the Left Analog Stick + Attack button. If you use Smash Stick, make A-button Tilts easier to perform with Low Sensitivity If you use Tilt Stick, make A-button Smashes easier to perform with High Sensitivity Set a lower sensitivity if you find it hard to Tilt with the A-button. As of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3.0.0 update, replay videos can be uploaded directly to YouTube via the Miiverse / Smash World sharing service and collected on the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app. This technique still requires an SD Card in your Switch to save videos. It does eliminate though the steps of removing the SD Card from your Switch, plugging it into your computer, manually posting to YouTube, etc. You will need to be signed in to the various Nintendo online accounts. Save a replay after a match. Go to Vault > Replays > Replay Data. Select a replay and Convert to Video to save the replay as a video onto your SD Card. NOTE: ignore the Post button when inspecting a replay. It appears to be non-functional. You cannot currently post/share a replay directly. Go to Vault > Replays > Video and select the just-created video. Select Post to share this replay to Miiverse / Smash World. Nintendo uses YouTube as the backing store for videos, so it will now take a few minutes to upload the video from your Switch directly to YouTube. Open the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app on your phone. Select Smash Ultimate > Profile > Posts. Once they have fully uploaded, your replay videos will appear here. Select a replay video. Click the Share arrow icon. Copy the link. Open this link in a web browser. The video will have been added as an unlisted video on the official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate YouTube account.
