You can place up to 10 ships in 1 fleet You can put 1 fleet into a trading port For each trading ship (war ships have no effect here) in a fleet occupying a trading port, you get a certain amount of money each turn. The amount you get is calculated every turn, so if you remove a trading ship from that fleet, you will earn less money next turn from that trading port If you put at least 1 trading ship on an trading port, a trading route will appear between that trading port and one of your coastal cities. IIRC, you can check the amount of money from a trading route simply by hovering your mouse over it. You can see last turn's total trading route revenue in the balance sheet. The best strategy to maximize revenue from an trading port is to put a fleet of 10 trading ships there and park some escorting warships directly next to it. The zone of control from the warships do not prevent enemies from attacking your trade fleet, but they will join the battle.

You can't create a custom formation. The next best solution is either: learn and use the provided formations, and/or divide a large formation into groupings and manually move each division to hold place in the formation

The Stealth Chain refers to the Sake Den from which you initially recruit ninja and it's upgrades. As your quote states you naturally need one den to have a single ninja and you can recruit another ninja for each additional den you construct up to a maximum of five ninja though there is no restriction on the number of stealth chain buildings you can and ninja can be recruited from any stealth chain building. If you lose or demolition stealth chain buildings so that you have fewer than the number of ninja you are currently fielding they will remain on the map but cannot be replaced if lost. The buildings mentioned in Dulkan's answer are special buildings only available in certain provinces that increases initial rank of newly recruited ninja agents and kisho ninja or extra income with smaller bonuses to units and agents.

Its because you are only being shown offensive retainers (retainers that affect your units). Defensive retainers are not shown to the enemy (though I believe there is a retainer that reveals your opponents defensive retainers). There is no penalty to taking max retainers. In fact, there is a penalty for NOT taking the maximum, because your general becomes more expensive to deploy with rank-ups, and so it is necessary to take the fullest advantage of your general as he becomes more expensive. Alternatively, your opponents could have prestige'd and thereby only have one retainer slot at the moment.

When you achieve enough fame, the shogun considers you a threat and orders all other clans to declare war. This includes allies who you may have had since the start of the game. While the province converts, you'll need to use other methods keep the population in check: Build entertainment buildings (e.g. sake den) to increase happiness Ensure the province has enough food Lower taxes, or exempt the province from taxation Upgrade forts/strongholds to increase repression Keep a large garisson to increase repression, and to handle rebellion if the population is just too unruly If the provinces are expensive and hard to hold, consider taking them slowly and giving them time to convert before moving further into enemy territory. Keeping extra armies nearby can be useful to help with rebellions and any enemy counter attacks - provided you can afford them. If you can't, consider balancing your budget by demolishing the more expensive buildings in the new provinces that do not contribute to conversion, happiness or repression. Once the provinces are largely converted, you can start taxing them and rebuilding the lost buildings while your armies move on to other enemy provinces.

The advantage is actually not that great. If you play a lot you do get more retainers and more experience for your general but it's overall strategy and tactics that will win you the game. My general currently has 8 stars and I remember when I started off I beat a 7 star general without using any veteran units or retainers. As to how the players are matched, if you let the game manage it, it will try to find a player of your level if one is available, if not, it will keep searching for any available player of sufficiently close rank.

I should have mentioned in my question, but the original offending province was Bungo. Bungo has a nanban port, which provides +3.5 to Christianity in that province and once Christianity reaches 100, it spreads to the surrounding provinces. So I need to destroy that port and build me a nice Buddhist temple!

No there are no other ways of becoming shogun, and there is only one way of winning a scenario. Different victory conditions that you can chose of are present in Rome 2.

This may seem contradictory, but I always loved the cannons ships you can get from the Nanban. They're really expensive, but they're extremely tough. Most enemy fleets can't approach one before they get obliterated. The best part is that they also double as trade ships, so you can easily convert a war fleet to a trade fleet. Or steal a trade node and start trading out of it with the same fleet They're costly but in my experience they more than pay for themselves when you have enough to support a fleet of them. Anything with cannons is good on land and sea due to the range that they have and that a good hit can kill groups of enemies. I prefer an all cannon ship setup but if you want to go for cost savings I would go for 1-3 for a fleet you intend to siege with. All told I have not experimented with the other ships too much since I found out how great the cannon ships were.

A retainer is basically a member of your government/organizational structure. They're not exactly modeled in the game but they're local officials keeping things running smoothly for you on a low level. In this case if you have this vassal killed there is a chance at an event occurring a few turns later where his son leads a rebellion against you in the province where the initial event occurred. So before killing him you should ask yourself if having a rebellion on your hands in that province can be dealt with easily and is worth the risk.

Rank and file refer to the depth and length of a formation. Deeper formations have more staying power - for example, a unit of cavalry might easily charge and emerge on the other side of a line three men deep, while a square formation will leave them stuck in the middle, exposed to a lot of danger. In general, shallow formations are also much more susceptible to being routed. Part of this is due to the intensity of fighting - a squad of 150 with 15 lines of 5 men each will only fight using 5-10 men at a time, thus greatly limiting casualties and morale swings. A squad of 150 with 3 lines of 50 men each will have almost every member at risk, suffering (and inflicting) casualties at a much greater rate, and thus causing much greater morale swings. In short, use shallow formations to inflict damage and outflank your opponent if you lack a numerical advantage, and use deep formations to stall and defend chokepoints. Usually, you'd be setting formation shape by right clicking and pulling. The buttons are rarely used, and mostly serve to allow you to quickly make minor changes, particularly if you need a formation to be just a teeny bit deeper or longer.

Kisho Ninjas stealth, bombs, and (relatively) high strength can make them good distractions with their small sizes. Kisho Ninjas are best used to disrupt enemy flanks, assassinate your enemy's generals, remove ranged archers or other ranged forces, or sneak into castles. Option A: You can hide them, use your main force to attack, and then use them to throw bombs at the occupied enemy forces. (Your Ninjas should be out of harms way, thus prolonging their use.) Option B: Sneak into undefended (or alternatively lightly, defended) castles. Option C: Lure units away with the Ninjas from areas you want to occupy (say Tenchu circles) and go in for the kill while enemies are distracted. (Alternatively, a more expendable force can be used to lure them away, and use the ninjas to provide support or kill off their pursuers). Option D: Banzai!! Experience from playing Shogun 2 long enough. Edit: As an alternative, you can always use Kisho Ninjas to defend castles, using grenades to take out climbing enemies. This way, your Ninjas (if not being rained upon by enemy arrows) will be out of harms way while quickly demoralizing the enemy.

Melee damage is calculated as: (Attack power+Charge bonus if applicable) - (melee defense+armor+special ability if applicable+ any other bonus if applicable). Ranged damage is calculated as: (Ranged attack power+accuracy+reloading skill) - (armor+formation if applicable) Melee makes sense, but ranged is still unclear to me. If you look on the stats sheet for a ranged unit like Bow Warrior Monks, there is no attribute for "Ranged attack power" (range is how far the unit can shoot). Can anyone confirm the validity of these formulas? Armor subtracts from attack power and other bonuses when damage is calculated.
